It is very frustrating when using the fw_bo working days function that it returns a string and not a number.

Why is this? Although there is a workaround, it would be nice to know why this is returned in such a format.

The function is set to return a string, not a number. Try using function dbo.f_working_days() instead. This function is set to return a number.
